Understanding Tariffs, Taxes and Customs Fees When Ordering Custom Jewelry

Hello friends,

One of the questions that come up from time to time is about tariffs, taxes, customs duties, and additional fees when ordering a custom piece of jewelry. I want to take a moment to explain how these costs work, because it’s something every customer should keep in mind when purchasing a handmade item from a jeweler like me.

When I create a custom piece, my role is to design, craft, and finish your jewelry with care and precision according to the exact specifications agreed upon.

What I cannot control, however, are the fees applied by governments or shipping carriers once the piece leaves my studio. Tariffs, import taxes, VAT, or brokerage fees are set entirely by your country’s customs regulations—not by me, nor by any other independent artist, maker, or creator.

It’s important to understand that these charges are not included in the price of your jewelry. They are separate costs imposed on the buyer, and they vary depending on the country you live in. For example, someone in Canada, the U.S. or Europe may all face very different customs rules, percentages, or thresholds.

I like to think of it this way: when you commission a piece, you’re paying me for the artistry, the materials, and the hours of work that go into creating it. Once it’s shipped, your government may add its own costs before it reaches your hands. That part is beyond my control, but it’s something to plan for in your budget so there are no surprises.

As a customer, it’s always a good idea to check your country’s customs and import rules ahead of time. This way, you’ll know exactly what to expect when your package arrives.

At the end of the day, my goal is always to make sure your custom jewelry experience is an exceptional one—from the first sketch to the final delivery. Being aware of tariffs and fees simply helps ensure the process is smooth and transparent.
